If you’re anything like me, you probably have a few anxieties before your vacation, with one of the biggest being car rental. I always worry about things like whether I’ll actually get the car I booked (or at least a comparable class), whether I’ll be pressured into buying unnecessary extras like insurance waivers, and of course the dreaded long queues after a long-haul flight.
We found Sunvalley Car Hire on Facebook and, after seeing consistently positive experiences from others, decided to give them a try. One of the main deciding factors for us was that they were happy to accept my Amex Platinum insurance benefits, which include CDW coverage. They did so without any issues or pushy tactics to get us to buy their insurance.
Another big plus was that they actually provide the exact car you book…yes, the actual model, not a vague “vehicle class” where you end up with something totally different or pushed into a higher-cost upgrade. This alone set them apart from most rental companies I’ve dealt with.
We booked a Nissan X-Trail, as a 4x4 is highly recommended for travelling around many regions of Costa Rica, and especially for reaching one of our Airbnb properties. Sunvalley also agreed to deliver the vehicle to our airport hotel since we arrived late the night before. They showed up right on time, and the handover was quick, friendly, and completely painless.
As for the vehicle itself, it performed perfectly. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll quickly learn that some roads in Costa Rica are rough — lots of uneven surfaces and plenty of potholes! But the X-Trail handled everything without a single issue: no reliability concerns, no punctures, nothing.
Overall, if you’re travelling to Costa Rica, I highly recommend Sunvalley Car Hire. From booking to drop-off, their simplicity, honesty, and reliability made the whole experience stress-free. Exactly what you want on vacation!

I am so glad that we rented a car through Sun Valley. The reservation process was transparent and efficient. They speak excellent English!

Sun Valley brought the rental car to SJO so I didn’t have to take a shuttle to the offsite rental car location (where all other agencies are located). I retrieved my car right at baggage claim exit. No shuttle, lines, waiting. It was perfectly smooth!

I found their prices to be fair and competitive. Highly recommend. If/when I return to Costa Rica, I wouldn’t even consider another agency.

I rent cars monthly and typically choose to work with companies I recognize, but after reviews I decided to rent from sun valley. It was the easiest rental process I’ve ever had! Fantastic experience with SUN and Alex. All cars are 4 wheel drive. He was able to deliver the car to the hotel and a drop off to the mall as we waited for our flight. This was the smoothest experience with a car rental EVER in Costa Rica. Also had the insurance paperwork sorted ahead of time and very responsive to email communication

Very easy rental experience! The pick up at the airport was seamless, we met Alex quickly after getting our bags and got our car at the lot. While others were waiting in rental lines, we were out the door and on our way! The car worked great and we were able to explore every where we wanted to go. We rented a Suzuki Grand Vitara for 3 Weeks and it was a great car for our family of 4. We had no problems at all, not even a flat tire. Alex was so kind to bring the car to our hotel in Alajuela and when we returned the car he also brought us back to our hotel. Great great service! 5 stars!!! Exceptional service. Dropped off the car to our hotel. They made the whole process seamless. The car was in great shape had usb A and C chargers AppleConnect for music and maps. They provide a hard copy of a map as well as a spare tire and emergency kit. They also offer roadside assistance if you should need it. There is also a Quick pass included as well for easy total road Navigation free of charge. I would totally use them again.

Superb service, excellent communication , fair prices and very transparent. We had a slightly older SUV at a cheaper price (at our request) that ran great for the month we had it. We did experience one mechanical issue and the team organized the repair in a pretty remote place with if a few hours - impressive!

We rented a 4x4 for a week during our trip to Costa Rica and had a great experience. The car was in great condition and came with a free cooler, which ended up being super handy throughout the trip. I have traveled to Costa Rica five times now and have rented from different car-rental companies on separate occasions, but Sun Valley Rental is without a doubt the best car rental company I have rented a car from in Costa Rica! They were very friendly from the beginning, explaining everything I needed to know to drive a car in Costa Rica. Also very transparent about their prices up front! No hidden fees or surprise charges! The price they quoted over the phone before I arrived to Costa Rica WAS the price I paid when I picked up the car! And the best part: they drop the car off to you right as you come out of the airport! And you also drop it off at the terminal! No need to wait for a shuttle to come pick you up and take you to an office away from the airport like the other rental companies do! Just came back from a week in Costa Rica and I strongly recommend to rent the car with Sun Velley. First of all their price are clear and understandable and comprehensive of all the mandatory insurance. Second that to me deserves 6 stars not 5 is the fact that for a minimum fee, they can bring and pick up the car at your hotel, plus they can sell you a local SIM card !! Last but not leas, they are very responsive to help with any info needed and very easy to contact. Alex the person who delivered the car was extremely friendly and helpful.

I am soooo glad I found Sun Valley when we were looking at rental cars in Costa Rica. If you have never rented a car in CR, you need to know that there is a significant hidden cost: the mandatory basic liability insurance, often not included in initial quotes from other companies. With Sun Valley, we knew exactly what we were paying. Alex met us at the airport, gave us a full tutorial, and was always available for questions or concerns throughout the trip. Drop-off was quick and easy. Do yourself a huge favor: skip the big rental companies you use in the U.S., avoid doubling the cost of your rental, and rent with Sun Valley. That may be the longest review I have ever left.

After reviewing many car rental options for Costa Rica we were super happy going with Sun Valley. Easy and clear communication. Excellent pick up at the airport or hotel options and super convenient drop right at the airport departures. They were waiting and all we had to do was pull up and hand over the keys. We got the mid-size 4x4 which was perfect for our trip to Manuel Antonio as there were some steal hills and gravel roads.
